Hello dear readers,
I didn’t mean to write another garden record so soon after the last one, but a lot has happened! Namely, the pumpkins have (almost) all been harvested and deposited at home.
When I drove up to my grandparents’ this morning, my grandpa was already clearing away the vines so we could better see what we’d ended up with. Unfortunately, we planted jack-o-lanterns next to sugar pumpkins, and so had a number of hybrids and smaller jack-o-lanterns. Which is fine! It means a number of them will go down at the bottom of their driveway for people to pick up on their way by.
After a cup of coffee, we hauled the pumpkins I was taking to the edge of the field and loaded them into both my car and my grandparents’ van. When we got home, the whole family was there to help unload and place the pumpkins around the yard (and around my aunt’s yard, which is next door).
And an incredibly fun surprise: while we were unloading, we found a praying mantis on the front steps! I’ve never before seen one around here, and I spend a lot of time digging around in the dirt, so I have no idea where this one came from. She was lime green and quite large—and active, too! She moved around on the stairs and nearby plants quite a bit before we moved on.
As for the back yard: after I finish writing this, I’ll be going out to take all the lawn ornaments and ceramic planters back to the shed for the winter. We still do have a week or so of sun forecast, but I’d like to get it done today so I can focus on other things throughout the week. Last week I mentioned needing to pull sunflowers and other herbs; I’ll likely save that for tomorrow, though.
I’ll keep this post short today so I can go back out and get some work done. It’s sunny, with harsh gusts of wind—my favourite autumn weather to be out in.
Hope you’re well ♡
