Full Moons of 2024: Planning Your Year in Line With the Moon’s Lunar Phases
Have you ever noticed your energy and emotions surge, only to look into the sky and see a full moon hanging there? Maybe you’ve chalked it up to something that happened at work, or that you’re just feeling off and aren’t sure why. Regardless of what causes it, you’ve likely noticed a shift around when the full moon rises.
This is exactly why I track when each full moon will occur, and this year, I’m planning ahead and collecting everything you’ll need to know about the full moons of 2024 right here. (I’d recommend bookmarking this page for future reference—I know I’ll be coming back to it!)
Below, you’ll find everything you need to know about the full moons of 2024, including some background information (where the names come from), why you may want to track when full moons are occurring, and what it means when people say “the moon is in [insert astrological sign here].” You’ll also find the names, dates, and times the full moons of 2024 will appear, as well as some extra information on associations and alternate names for each full moon.
Where do the names of the full moons come from?
The names of full moons are simple in that they are derived from the behaviour of plants, animals, and weather during a given month. For example, the Pink Moon is called such for the variety of pink flowers that come into bloom during April, and the Harvest Moon is named for its alignment with the final harvest of the year.
Many of the names we use today were created by the Algonquin First Nation—Indigenous peoples who have traditionally lived in what is now called Quebec and Ontario—though some have roots in medieval Europe, as well as Pagan origins.
However, it is important to note that different First Nations in Canada, and Native American nations in the United States, may have their own names for each moon (some of which you will find below).
Why track the full moons?
For millennia, humans have tracked full moons in order to monitor the passing year, as well as to set and track schedules for planting, hunting, and gathering.
In present day, a person may track each full moon for the same purpose, or they may do so to align their magic practice with the moon’s lunar cycles, to track their own menstrual cycle, or for other personal or spiritual reasons—some people believe there are certain things you should or shouldn’t do on a full moon.
Whatever your reason for tracking the full moons of 2024, knowing when they occur and what they signify can help you plan ahead.
What does it mean when a full moon is in an astrological sign?
When a full moon is in any given astrological sign, it means that that astrological sign will affect how a person experiences the world around them. For example, when the moon is in an earth sign (capricorn, taurus, or virgo), we can expect to be productive and get things done we’ve been putting off. On the other side of things, if the moon is in a water sign (cancer, scorpio, or pisces), there will be drama and tears.
Really, what this means is that—just as with all the other planets—the moon has the ability to affect our day-to-day lives. And knowing what sign the moon is in (especially a full moon, which is commonly linked to extreme energy and emotions), can help us plan accordingly.P.S. the moon switches signs about every two and a half days, and whatever sign the moon is in will affect the world as a whole.

Associations: Embracing our lighthearted side, letting go of old patterns to make room for growth.

Associations: The (once high) availability of sturgeon in the waters at this time, a time when energy intensifies.

September 17, 2024: Super Harvest Moon
September’s supermoon will be on Tuesday, September 17th.
Astrological sign: Pisces
Associations: A time to find balance and appreciate abundance, time to reap the rewards of the harvest and our achievements.
